A co-worker tipped me off to this “bucket filling” concept. So what is bucket filling? Bucket fillers are those who help without being asked, give hugs, compliments, and generally spread their love and good feeling to others. The simple metaphor of a bucket helps even preschoolers’ understand the importance of consideration and love. People who dip into our buckets often rob us of happy feelings by refusing to help with a task or by saying or doing cruel things. The challenge of bucket dipping usually rears its ugly head in the first few weeks of school and it can be contagious. Bucket filling is a new twist on the Golden Rule. Since 2006, Bucket Fillers, Inc. have been creating bucket filling schools, families, workplaces and communities by sharing their books, products, resources and community presentations.
Across from my office, in the Public Health building, is a bulletin board that changed to reflect the season or happenings in our workplace. Each day we are reminded to check our buckets? Are they full? Are we dipping into others? It’s a daily reminder to fill others buckets; be positive, be helpful, be kind, encouraging and considerate. The concept is relatively simple but I would encourage you to check out their webpage for ideas and resources that may potentially help you or others you now “fill their buckets”!
This isn’t necessarily a plug for Bucket Filling, Inc. but more of an informational resource for you to share with others, with your family or in your work place. To visit their website click here.
